Frequently Asked Questions
Where will my massage take place?
Your massage will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music may be played to help you relax. You will lie on a heated table especially designed for your comfort.
Must I be completely undressed?
Most massage and bodywork techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed; Ashiatsu is best received completely unclothed, however, you may undress to your comfort level. You will be properly draped during the entire session.
Will the practitioner be present when I disrobe?
The practitioner will leave the room while you undress, relax onto the table, and cover yourself with a clean sheet.
Will I be covered during the session?
You will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed.
What parts of my body will be massaged by the practitioner’s feet?
A typical full-body session will include work on your back, arms, hands, glutes, legs, feet, neck, and shoulders. Finishing with a facial massage by the practitioner’s hands.
What is Ashiatsu?
“Ashi” in Japanese means “foot.” “Atsu” means “pressure.” It is known as “the deepest, most luxurious massage on the planet.” Ashiatsu uses gravitational force & gliding effleurage, from the therapist’s feet instead of hands. Parallel bars attached to the ceiling are used for balance & proper weight distribution. The size and padding of clean, sanitized soles provide a push-pull- pump technique that is not only deeper, but more comfortable than traditional massage. Feet vs. hands affect the clients’ parasympathetic nervous system greater, allowing them to dive deeper into relaxation.
What will an Ashiatsu massage feel like?
Ashiatsu offers deep, broad compression without sharp discomfort. Ashiatsu is meant to feel more like a mesmerizing Swedish massage using deep broad pressured flowing strokes — with no pain.
How does Ashiatsu work?
In an Ashiatsu session, the client relaxes on a comfortable massage table while the therapist stands on the table holding onto overhead bars for balance and support, using their feet to deliver the massage. The advantage of this massage — both for the client and the therapist — is that Ashiatsu allows gravity to do the work, leveraging the therapists' body weight to provide a depth unmatched by other techniques.
What should I do during the massage?
Prior to the massage, feel free to ask the practitioner any questions about the technique or the upcoming session. During the massage, make yourself comfortable. The practitioner will either gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the session (such as lifting your arm). Many people just close their eyes and completely relax; communicating if/when they need more or less pressure, another blanket, or anything else relevant to the session. If you have any questions regarding the session or about the particular technique you are receiving, feel free to ask.
How will I feel after the massage?
Most people feel very relaxed or “floaty”. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed - down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days.
